Muestro Nombre

Our Name

La Djente (lit. The People) in Ladino has its roots as El Ermanado Sefaradi (The Sephardic Brother), a community newsletter first published in the 1940s by the Sephardic Brotherhood. Initially a modest quarterly and bi-annual print publication, it served as a vital link for Sephardic throughout the United States, fostering connections and preserving the unique culture, language, and traditions of the community. Over the decades, the Sephardic Brotherhood and the community it represents in America has evolved, so too has our print and digital reach. To reflect this, our Community magazine evolved into a broader

cultural platform, maintaining its commitment to Ladino language and Sephardic heritage while adapting to the changing needs of our audience, ensuring the enduring legacy of Sephardic identity and voices are more fully represented. Hence, we have chosen the unique name of La Djente, never before used for a previous Ladino language or Sephardic communal publication, to better reflect the broader voices of the Sepharadim who write for us, while still grounding ourselves in our language and identity. The use of the 'Dj-" is also a deliberate choice, as it better reflects the linguistic diversity of the Ladino language.

The Sephardic Jewish Brotherhood of America serves as the national-umbrella organization of the Ladino-speaking Sephardic Community of the United States. It has the unique mission to support Sephardic individuals, families, and communities deriving their lineage from the Ladino-speaking Jewish communities of Greece, Turkey, and the Balkans. Through college and graduate school scholarships, special funds for the needy, Sephardic Youth & Young Professional Programming, Trips to Israel and Jewish Greece, Jewish burial services, and Sephardic educational programming, the Sephardic Brotherhood works to centrally serve all aspects of Sephardic Jewish life in America.
