Etz Chaim Sephardic Congregation of Indianapolis announced the appointment of Rabbi Daniel Askenazi as its new spiritual leader. Rabbi Askenazi, who brings a wealth of experience in Sephardic traditions, officially began his tenure in September just in time for the High Holidays.
A dynamic educator and community builder, Rabbi Askenazi previously served as the Rabbi of the Jewish Community of Barcelona, Spain. He is known for his engaging Torah teachings, deep knowledge of Sephardic heritage, and commitment to fostering vibrant Jewish life.
Rabbi Askenazi was born in Mexico City and is originally of Syrian Sephardic descent. At age 18, he left Mexico for Israel to attend Yeshiva and serve in the Israel Defense Forces, where he served in the army for nearly 9 years. He studied at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, earning a BA in Political Science and later on a LLB at the North Colombian University. After receiving his Semikha (rabbinic ordination) from Rabbi Eliyahu Ben Haim, he and his wife served Jewish Communities in Colombia, Los Angeles, and Barcelona, before coming to Indianapolis.
The congregation is excited about Rabbi Askenazi’s vision for the future. “Rabbi Askenazi’s warmth and dedication to our traditions will help grow and strengthen our community,” said Etz Chaim president Alan Cohen. “We’re thrilled to welcome him and his family to Indianapolis.” To celebrate this new chapter, Etz Chaim has launched a series of new weekly Torah learning programs and cultural engagement programs led by both the new Rabbi and Rubissa.
Etz Chaim Sephardic Congregation has served the Indianapolis Jewish community for over 120 years, preserving the rich customs of Sephardic Jews from Monastir, Salonika, and across the Mediterranean. With Rabbi Askenazi’s leadership, the congregation looks forward to building on its legacy and welcoming a new era of growth and inspiration.
