Congregation Ahavath Achim, Portland, Oregon's Sephardic synagogue is proud to be celebrating our 109th year serving the greater Portland Jewish community. Regular Shabbat morning services are led by our wonderful new hazzan and spiritual leader Yosef Rosen, a distinguished Jewish educator and Kabbalah historian with a PHD from UC Berkeley. Following services we enjoy a festive lunch and Torah discussion. In addition we celebrate the first Friday of the month with erev Shabbat tefila followed by an authentic Sephardic Shabbat Dinner prepared by our own Ahavath Achim kitchen committee.
It is not unusual for attendees to break out in song singing the Ladino Romanzas of the week. Our monthly Shabbat Dinners has been a Portland Jewish community favorite and seats sell out very fast. Our amazing community leader Renee Ferrera leads cooking classes teaching the baking of such Sephardic delicacies as borekas, spinach kuashatho and ashuplathos. We continue to present our Sephardic Film series, now in its 19th year, followed by a discussion and Sephardic desserts. Congregation Ahavath Achim, founded by members of the Turkish and Rhodesli communities over 100 years ago is proud to welcome Jews of all backgrounds to join us in keeping Sephardic Portland alive and well.
