Summer 2022 - Letter from the New Editor

As Sephardic Jewish communities geographically dispersed around the world, El Ermanado Sefaradi, the Sephardic Brother, brings us together and gives us a sense of belonging. This magazine is a celebration of our rich culture; each issue will aim to feature our thriving community and celebrate its accomplishments.

With this summer edition and the upcoming year, the new Editorial Committee plans to empower the next generation of Sephardic youth, with perspectives from young leaders working to reinvent what it means to be Sephardic in the 21st Century. We will spotlight our different communities, from New York to Seattle, to Athens and Mexico, where we’ll hear about the diversity of Sephardic Life. Our shared language, culture, liturgy and traditions, which anchor our vibrant network of communities, will come alive in the pages of our community magazine and honor our rich history with original Ladino content. We are now the only printed publication in the United States producing new and original content in the language of de los Muestros - Ladino.

Heading into the heat of summer, hopefully enjoying richikas in the city streets or watermelon and feta by the water, I encourage readers to consider the ladino refrane: “kaminando kon buenos,” literally meaning “walking with good.'' This Ladino phrase can be understood as guidance to surround ourselves with good people. The summer issue and the year to follow will be grounded in spreading the “good” of the people in our communities.

As the new Editor of El Ermanado Sefaradi, I want to acknowledge the hard work of the previous committee to grow the magazine over the past year, and I hope to build on that progress by continuing to expand the reach of our publication. If you enjoy our content, we ask that you spread the word with friends, family, synagogues and institutions. If you have a story to tell, we encourage you to submit an article on Sephardic life, history, culture, Ladino, or something else. If you have a business or an organization to promote, we ask that you support our publication with quarterly advertising. These are all small ways you can contribute to celebrate Sephardic Communities from around the world, and to elevate our unique culture and identity. Happy reading!
