The Seattle Sephardic Community is back in action like never before! We’ve been having a wonderful winter of new programs, youth activities, Shabbatonim, and scholars-in-residence. In December, we had a wonderful Hanuka party at Sephardic Bikur Holim Congregation, with beautiful kids activities, delicious food, and a group Menora lighting. In January, we had a special youth-led Shabbat at SBH, with our synagogue’s youth leading the tefillah for Shabbat along with a special Shabbaton with Brothers for Life, an Israeli nonprofit that organizes former soldiers who were injured during their service to help other injured soldiers with their post-combat struggles.

At the beginning of February, we joined our sister Congregation Ezra Bessaroth for a fantastic joint Frutikas - Tu Bishevat Seder, bringing together over 200 people from across the Seattle Sephardic Community. Our children proudly read portions of the Frutikas Seder in Hebrew, Ladino, and English, and we had a delicious dinner together with words of Torah. We also received a special visit from Tablet Magazine’s Unorthodox Podcast, who will be doing a story soon on Seattle’s Sephardic Community and its customs.

In addition, SBH made history with its election of its first female President, Miri Tilson, a fourth generation Seattle Sepharadi. We wish her and First Vice President Jack Gottesman a mazal bueno - good luck in their leadership of our synagogue and the wider Jewish community. SBH is also blessed to announce the new Lazar and Katherine Scharhon Memorial Scholarship, which will go towards an SBH High Schooler’s one-year of education in Israel (such as yeshiva, seminary, or university). We have many more exciting programs coming up this Spring, including our Purim party and new joint programs in the greater Sephardic Community.
